The Polish violinist and composer Henryk Wieniawski (1835-80) who was only 19 years old when he wrote L'école moderne: Etudes-Caprices pour le Violon seul Op.10 in 1854 (In the music magazine of the publisher Cöln: Schloss called Rheinische Musik-Zeitung für Kunstfreunde und Künstler No. 51, December 23, 1854 on page 8). By this time, however, he had composed several works of outstanding quality, including his Polonaise de concert in D major op. 4 (1852), the Violin Concerto in f sharp minor op. 14 (1853), and the Thème original varié op. 15 (1854). He was also an experienced touring virtuoso, often performing his own works and usually sharing the stage with his younger brother, Jósef, who accompanied him on piano in a highly regarded duo. Unfortunately, no manuscript has survived of L'école moderne, so our present research was conducted entirely from the first printed edition Leipzig: Senff, n.d. Plate 109. The publishing house of Hofmeister which was founded in 1807 and was a very important publishing firm in Europe from the early 19th century to the mid-20th century, publishing works by some of the most important composers of the time, Beethoven, Brahms, and Wagner, including Wieniawski. The plate number "109" for this specific work indicates the registration number assigned by the publishing house to this work, and is one way in which musical works published by this and other publishing houses of the time could be identified and tracked. It is important to note that the abbreviation "n.d." after the publisher's name means "undated," indicating that there is no specific publication date available on this edition of the score, this beautiful copy is available from München, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek -- 4 Mus.pr. 19232.The work was dedicated to his German violinist friend Ferdinand David, who was also a composer and conductor in Leipzig. In the world of academic music of his time, their paths crossed on several occasions. Ferdinand David is known to have performed the world premiere of Wieniawski's Violin Concerto No. 2 in Leipzig in 1862. David was also the recipient of Wieniawski's Violin and Piano Sonata No. 1, which was dedicated to him. David and Wieniawski are said to have been the first violin soloists to play together in the premiere of J.S. Bach in Leipzig in 1854, the same year that L'école moderne was published, which, moreover, the work was originally written to be used as a pedagogical tool for violin students, and its name refers to the "modern school" of the violin technique that consists of 10 studies ranging from arpeggios and scales to double and triple stops, and combines advanced violin techniques with a careful and expressive musical composition, where what Wieniawski called "devil's staccato" is appreciated was used to discipline students ' technique and can be seen in several of his etudes-caprices, for example the Allegro giocoso (N°4) in A major entitled Le Staccato. Our edition contains the original detailed fingerings and bows of the first edition, carefully revised note by note, we have resisted the temptation to place text over the score to give certain solutions to discrepancies, however, we decided to place the corrections tacitly over the music without altering the composer's intention, in most cases, in order not to overload the work for practical purposes for the violin player, we decided to add in gray color some possible solutions. We have also corrected most of the spelling errors of the first edition and improved the distribution of measures and page crossings, giving better performance at the time of the study of the part.
