This book is a modern translation of the Vajraśekhara Sarvatathāgata-tattvasaṃgraha Mahāyāna-abhisamaya Mahākalparāja Sūtra (commonly known as the Vajraśekhara Sūtra), one of the most important scriptures forming the core of Esoteric Buddhism (Mikkyō). It is an attempt to translate the profound and often challenging wisdom of this sutra into accessible language, allowing us, living in the modern age, to feel closer to its teachings and grasp a part of its essence.About the Vajraśekhara SūtraThe Vajraśekhara Sūtra is a representative scripture of Late Tantric Buddhism, believed to have been established around South India from the late 7th to the early 8th century. While the complete Sanskrit original is not extant, its teachings have been transmitted through Tibetan translations and, notably, Chinese translations.Among the Chinese translations, those by two great scholar-monks who traveled from India to China in the 8th century, Vajrabodhi (671-741) and his disciple Amoghavajra (705-774), are well-known. In particular, Amoghavajra's translation, the Vajraśekhara Sarvatathāgata-tattvasaṃgraha Mahāyāna-abhisamaya Mahākalparāja Sūtra (in two or three fascicles), was highly valued by Kōbō Daishi Kūkai, the founder of the Shingon school in Japan, and played a decisive role in forming the foundation of Japanese Esoteric Buddhism. This modern translation is primarily based on Amoghavajra's version.Although no single individual is credited as the "author," the sutra can be seen as a crystallization of rich wisdom, compiled and refined through years of deepening esoteric thought and practice. Its content centers on the structure of the "Vajradhātu Mandala," a diagram illustrating the truth of the universe and the world of Buddhas, and the various Buddhas and Bodhisattvas residing therein. It details the "Five Aspects of the Perfected Body" (Goso Jōshin Kan), a practice for gradually realizing the inherent Buddha-nature within us, and the concept of "attaining Buddhahood in this very body" (Sokushin Jōbutsu). Furthermore, it elaborates on specific practices (mudras, mantras, visualizations). It can be considered a magnificent and intricate guidebook for exploring the infinite potential within oneself and practicing compassion and wisdom in the real world. This Modern Translation EffortThe classical Chinese translation of the Vajraśekhara Sūtra is extremely difficult for modern readers to comprehend, not only due to its profound content but also because of its vocabulary and expressions. Consequently, access to its teachings has largely been limited to specialized researchers and practitioners. This book was born from the desire to deliver the teachings of the Vajraśekhara Sūtra, a precious spiritual heritage of humankind, to a wider audience. In translating, I have strived to remain faithful to the meaning of the original text (Chinese translation) while using natural and understandable modern language. For specialized terms in Buddhism, particularly Esoteric Buddhism, brief annotations are provided where necessary, aiming to make the text accessible even for those encountering it for the first time.Through This BookIt is my sincere hope that this modern translation will serve as an aid for readers to become aware of their own inner stillness and brilliance – their "Buddha-nature." Furthermore, I hope that the cosmology, view of humanity, and practical wisdom for overcoming difficulties and finding peace presented in the Vajraśekhara Sūtra will offer some guidance and spiritual support for navigating our complex and rapidly changing modern society. Please open this book and open the door to the world of adamantine, brilliant wisdom.
