THE DEVILS OF LOUDUN, Huxley 1953 1st Ed

Aldous Huxley’s non-fiction account of a religious “witch hunt” and the group madness of a small French town crucifying their own in the 1600’s (400 years ago). Huxley explores the psychological background of haters: He said, “ Envy modulated into hatred and contempt.” Another memorable insight about the religious prelates of Loudun at this hysterical time:“ To men and women under the influence of herd- poison, ‘whatever I say three times is true - and whatever I say three hundred times is Revelation, is the directly inspired Word of God.” (The big lie 3rd Reich way). Huxley observes that “if there had been no exorcists, it (the witch hunts) would have never begun.” He details the human actors who led the masses of this small town into brutality in the name of “greater transcendence.” This First American Edition has no dust cover.
