About Lumber Sizes & Shipping Length Restrictions Widths range from 4" to 10", with prices for random selections. You can request specific widths or add a straight edge rip in the order form. Lengths range from 6' to 12', with the exact length depending on your order. We strive to ship the longest lengths possible, up to 84" (7'). Longer lengths can be shipped via truck freight, but this method is usually economical only for shipments of at least 450 lbs (approx 100-150 board feet). Thickness is 1-13/16" (8/4, S2S), surfaced on both sides. You should be able to yield approximately 1-3/4" thickness after flattening, planing, shaping, or sanding your project parts. Lumber ordering works in three steps: decide how much you need in Board Feet, consider extra for arranging grain or color, and choose your size requirements in the order form. Weight is 3.75 lbs/Bd. Ft., 4.75% heavier than red oak. Hardness is 1970 Janka Rating, 52.71% harder than red oak. Density is 0.61 Specific Gravity, -4.69% less dense than red oak. African Padauk (Pterocarpus soyauxii) grows in Africa and has a straight, well-shaped trunk that can reach 100 feet with a buttressed trunk up to 48" at breast height. Other names include Mbe, Mbil, Mututi, Ngula, and Bosulu. It's often used for musical instruments, furniture, flooring, turning, and accessories. Color ranges from bright orange red when fresh to dark chocolate brown or light brown upon oxidization. Lumber 101: Hardwood lumber is typically sold in random widths and lengths, measured in Board Feet. Our lumber is kiln dried, surfaced smooth on both sides, and at least 83% clear on one side. Ordering lumber involves picking a wood, deciding how much you need, and providing your specifications if you have any. A Board Foot is a measurement of volume, equal to 144 cubic inches. We offer a Board Foot Calculator, Cheat Sheet, Project Planner Spreadsheet, and Video Tutorial to help with your project planning. You can request certain sizes in the order form, and we'll help you achieve your desired outcome. We can't guarantee 100% clear wood, but most of our lumber is graded 'Select' and better, with at least 83% clear on one side.
