Sanga (or Sangha) is a group of thirteen villages in the Dogon region of Mali, known as a religious center with many temples and shrines, and is a base for visitors to the local Dogon villages. They bring this mask as a gift to the elite members of the community to show appreciation for their help. Mohammed carves this piece from sese wood and decorates it with clay and painted motifs to achieve an antique illusion. About our Artist: 'My work is very unique because I craft African masks of extremely high quality. Moreover, I have innovated some creativity into my art with local available resources, such as calabash and cowries,' says Ghana's Sefah Mohammed. 'There are a lot of factors that motivate me but the significant one is to depict the uniqueness of African history for our younger generations. I have trained a lot of carvers who are still carving and making ends meet for their families.'
