Sitting near a naked person and staring at their arms, torso, genitals, faces, hair and feet for hours is a unique and rather peculiar experience. Jeff Whipple has selected more than 400 of his life drawings from the past four decades to chronicle his life drawing life. His realistic renderings of nudes depict a wide array of body types, races, and ages from 18 to 80s during his own ages from 18 to 60s. The drawings capture the likeness and character of each model and the facial expression they use for being stared at. Most of the drawings are sharp-point pencil, which is a particularly difficult technique. There are also artworks in charcoal, pastel, acrylic, oil, and watercolor.Whipple writes about his methods and experiences drawing people from life. Each model has a distinct personality and he has stories about some of their quirks, charms and skills. He taught figure drawing at the college level since 1982 and shares insights on working with students drawing live models. Whipple’s art career has focused on highly distinctive visual art that’s metaphorically and philosophically charged. His life drawings are not related to any of that and have never been exhibited. They represent the artist’s art-for-fun, made in the company of other artists, and what he did for relaxation after working alone in his studio on his much more challenging paintings, drawing and sculpture.
