The Copper Strip Corrosion Test evaluates the relative corrosivity of various petroleum products, such as aviation fuels, automotive gasoline, and lubricating oils, among others. A polished copper strip is submerged in 30mL of the sample at an elevated temperature. Post-test, the strip is inspected for signs of corrosion, and a classification number between 1 and 4 is assigned based on a comparison with ASTM Copper Strip Corrosion Standards. For aviation fuels and natural gasoline, the sample tube is placed inside a stainless steel pressure vessel during testing.
