BABY BOOMERS. THE TRASHING OF AMERICA. The beginning of this book is a review of major events in recent, living history that propelled America to unprecedented prosperity. The book follows a rough chronological order from World War Two on, with some flashbacks referring to events of earlier historic times. I’ve taken this approach because to truly know who and where we are, we must first know who we were and where we have been. This is not to say that in ignorance of history we are destined to repeat it. We are not. My definition of it, like that of Mark Twain, is that “history is just one damned thing after another.” Furthermore, history is inaccurate, written as it is by the victors and survivors in a contentious world.History is not a reliable guide to either the past or the future. But some knowledge of it, especially relatively recent events, provides better perspective for understanding who we are becoming and where we may well be going.I have no apology for the value judgments made throughout this work or the perspective from which I’ve proceeded: namely, that America is the greatest and fairest country our world has ever produced, and that its continued prosperity and power are essential to the ultimate emergence of a greater, fairer world. What is at any moment in time “best” for Africa, or Asia, the “poor,” or any putative class of people in whatever dire circumstances is not, necessarily, what is in America’s interest, and we should be most concerned about what is in America’s interest. For all our many and growing defects, we remain the model, the guide, and the hope of the world. Read more
